Jilin Hani National Nature Reserve,China

Jilin Hani National Nature Reserve is located in the water conservation area of the upper Hani River at southeast of Liuhe County, Tonghua City, Jilin Province, whose geographical coordinates are at 126°04′09″ –?126°33′30″east longitude and 42°04′12″-?42°14′30″ northern latitude.

The Hani Nature Reserve is in the category of “natural ecosystem” and the type of “inland wetland and water ecosystem”, with a total area of 22,230 hectares. It was established in 1991 as a Municipal Nature Reserve and promoted to a Provincial Nature Reserve in 2002. In 2009, under the approval of the State Council, it was promoted to a National Nature Reserve.

Hani River, the major river in this Reserve, rises in the Hani Basin in the northeast of the Reserve, flowing from east to west and southward into Liangshuihezi Town, then turning southward into Tonghua County at Balishao, then into Hun River, and finally into Yalu River. The peat-bog wetland in the headwater area of Hani River has the thickest and most continuous peat layer with fastest deposition rate in the northeast region of China, which plays an important role in water conservation, water purification, climate regulation and so on. There are 4 kinds of protected animals of the national grade I, that is, Ciconia boyciana, Aquila chrysaetos, Martes zibellina Linnaeus; 31 kinds of protected animals of the national grade II, such as:Cygnus Cygnus,?Milvus migrans,?Selenarctos thibetanus Cuvier,?etc.; 1 kind of protected plant of the national grade I: taxus cuspidata; 6 kinds of protected plants of the national grade II, such as:?Tilia amurensis, Pinus koraiensis, etc.

With the continuous development of the environmental protection work, Hani Natural Reserve has been gradually built into a demonstration base integrating natural conservation, scientific education and science popularization education through constant improvement of the scientific research management and strengthening of domestic and international academic exchanges and technical cooperation, which provides a hard foundation for the maintenance of regional ecological balance, rapid development of biological resources and development of scientific research.
